Despite England playing Germany in the World Cup (and let’s not dwell on that), supporters and players gathered for the Handicap Finals on Sunday, 27 June, the hottest day of the year!
New parasols and bunting lent a festive air for the first Club finals of the season. This is a popular Club tournament and one in which players of all abilities have an equal chance of playing - and winning. We were especially pleased to see the Club’s strong junior division represented by two of the finalists, Marianne and Charlotte.
The Ladies’ and Men’s singles began at 1.30 pm - some good rallies and points and both were closely contested to the enjoyment of the spectators. As the thermometer rose to 30 degrees, the Ladies’ and Men’s doubles followed and both went to 3 hard-fought sets.
A welcome break for tea followed - a delicious spread plus Pimms and strawberries produced by Suzanne and her team, with proceeds going to charity.
The final match was the Mixed Doubles with Heather McCarthy and Stephen Buckley playing against Charlotte Newland and Paul Treacy.
Presenting the trophies Chairman Paul Treacy also thanked Dave Bisson for setting up the Handicap Tournament and Susan Gilchrist for taking it through to the Finals, and all those who helped to make the day a success. Congratulations to the winners!
